Architect Dale Gardon Discusses Designing His Own Home in Scottsdale
Dec 20, 2016

Since 1999, Dale Gardon Design in Scottsdale has been creating contextually authentic designs for master-planned communities, mixed-use developments, golf clubhouses, and luxury custom residences. We spoke with Gardon about a project near and dear to his heart: his own personal residence in Scottsdale’s DC Ranch community.

What are some examples of how your design addressed your objectives?
Since it was a home for my family, we could make the choice to have the design uniquely configured to provide all the primary living spaces on the second level, and all the secondary bedroom/bath/recreation room on the first level. This floor plan “inversion” provided us with unbelievable panoramic views that would not have been possible with a conventional floor plan design, and many other clients would have been hesitant to accept without seeing it first.

Who were the builder and the interior designer?
Salcito Custom Homes in Scottsdale was the builder. My wife and I did the interior selections ourselves, with Berghoff Design Group creating the landscape design.

What is the design style of the home?
Contemporary Western regional.

What examples in the home reflect this?
The exterior design and massing with a front “porch” and broad shaded are like older ranch homes, and exterior materials reflect the character of Western regional ranch architecture but with a contemporary interpretation and current materials that provide longer-lasting durability.

How did large openings play a role in the design of the home?
By creating plenty of outdoor living spaces, indoor-outdoor connectivity, and providing panoramic views in many directions — all in addition to plenty of natural light throughout the day.

How do you address energy efficiency in your designs?
Given the stringent requirements we now have to comply with, we brought in an energy analysis consultant who helped analyze the system at a greater level of detail than the standard software available from the jurisdiction. His thorough analysis provided the detail we needed to reach compliance.

How did Western Window Systems products meet your design objectives for the home?
We wanted a natural metal finish inside and out, so the anodized aluminum was very compatible with the other exterior and interior materials to provide a nice accent.

What differentiates Western Window Systems products from the competition?
For me, it was a long-term commitment from vice president of custom sales Andrew Darr and president and CEO Scott Gates to make this happen. They came through at a very competitive cost.
